Felicity Merriman, I feel the exact same way. Right now, I have seven dolls, and heres how I got them (Im going to do the thing Julia did )
Samantha was my first doll
Josefina was for Easter.
Then Nellie came and I absolutely had to have her because Sam needed a friend.
Hayden is my AGPNY girl.
Felicity was for Christmas
Marisol was a surprise from my dad
And, last but definetly not least, I bought my replacement Molly.
AND, Bitty baby is coming, and im also planning on getting (as you might know) AGT 24, Michelle Casey and making her an ice skater.
To top that all off, how am I going to resist Elizabeth? There you have it, by the end of the year, I'm going to have a total of 10 dolls. Plus I'm probably going to get the 2006 LE.
So, you're not alone

I support the idea of selling slowly to see how you feel about it, and also about giving Kirsten to your mom! I would LOVE it if my mom actually wanted a doll of her own.
I must admit I don't really relate to the whole "too many dolls" idea, though. I have a lot of dolls and I love it that way. I tend to "fixate" on one or two dolls at a time - for a week I'll spend time with Samantha and Kirsten, changing their clothes and hair and having them sit at the foot of the bed, and the next week I'll move on to Kit and Felicity and give them the special treatment, and so on. I never feel like I neglect any of my dolls; they all get attention eventually. I think I would get bored if I only had two or three dolls to play with. I like variety. And I think having a lot of dolls appeals to the creative writing major in me - it is almost like having my own little world/society that I can make into anything I want. Like which dolls are good friends and which dolls don't get along as well, what books and t.v. shows they all like to watch, which AGT's are sisters or step sisters, etc. There's just more scope for my imagination with lots of characters and personalities in my doll collection.
But, to each his own. If you're happier with less dolls, by all means do what you need to do to be happy with your collection!

I wouldn't mind having all the dolls if I had a separate doll room and unlimited funds. I don't forsee that, however, so getting a lot of dolls makes my limited space feel cluttered which makes me unhappy.

I did this once - I had seven AG dolls and sold all but two. I also sold tons of furniture - I had six complete school sets, a complete birthday, and a complete bed set. It took up a LOT of space, and I was kind of feeling like you are now so I purged all but the really special items. I really, really regret it now, although at the time I felt like I had to do it. I only have three dolls now and I can't wait to get all my old dolls back, plus the new ones that came out after I sold my collection. They definitely mean more to me now. My suggestion would be to give Kirsten to your mom and box the others up - put them in the attic or storage for a year or two or three - however long it takes for you to miss them - and if after a few years you really don't care to have them back, you can sell them then.

Personally, I would say that unless you really need the money, you probably shouldn't sell them. Why not put the dolls away in their boxes and store them for a few months/years. Leave Kaya, Josephina, and Molly out and enjoy them. You never know if you might change your mind and then you'd really regret selling them. You could also give them to your mom, because that way they'd stay in the family at least and she'd probably let you have one or all of them back someday if/when you change your mind.
Also, just because you have a doll DOES NOT mean that you need to collect every outfit or accessory for them. I can't imagine having a whole collection of outfits, much less accessories, for all of my dolls. It would be too overwhelming and expensive. Why not just enjoy the dolls you have and the outfits you already have for them. If you see something you like for another doll, you could buy it, but I don't think you should feel entitled to collect everything for all of your dolls. I certainly don't. I'm a long time collector and the only doll who I have all outfits for (and very few accessories), minus the "special edition" or "accessory" outfits, is Kirsten. I have Felicity, Addy, Samantha, Kit, and an AGT who all have very incomplete collections. I only bought the outfits I liked the most for Addy, Felicity, and Samantha and don't feel like I have to have every outfit for all of them. It sounds like maybe you need a "rest" from AG and perhaps it would be best if you just put part of your collection away for a while.

I really should have mentioned in the beginning how sparse my American Girl wardrobe is. I only have one or two outfits, including their 'Meet' outfits, for most of them. And the only accessories I have for them are their 'Meet' acessories, and Kit's school bag and supplies. Kaya has almost all of her collection though...So, I would really want a small collection of dolls also so it would be easier to complete collections. And if I sell some of my dolls, then I would have money to do so...

I see what you mean...
well, good luck with the decision. I would still say that if possible try to hold on to all of your dolls but just put a few away for a while. As someone said, if they've been put away for a while and you don't miss them, then you could sell them.
Perhaps, to earn money for other dolls' clothes, you could sell some old/unused electronics, cds, dvds, books, etc. on ebay before you start selling off your AG collection? It's amazing the stuff you can sell on ebay...

too many dolls....I hate to say it, but I'm starting to wonder myself? As of tonight, we have 4 historicals, Lindsey and Marisol, and by tomorrow, Diana will have Kailey for her bday. That brings me to 7 AG's, Bitty, and the Twins. She'll be getting Felicity (and probably Elizabeth) for Christmas.
I'm almost finished with converting an unused smaller bedroom to our new doll room, and it is nice to have a place for all of them, but last night I found myself looking at all their little faces staring at me! OK, I was getting real tired, though, so maybe that's why it got to me!

ps...it has been my goal to eventually have all 8 Historicals, although I seriously doubt I will collect all the friend dolls. I love all the LE dolls so far and have them, so we'll see on future LE's. I'm only interested in one AGT however, the Asian one. Still for me, that puts me at 17 dolls including the babies, which sounds kind of incredible to me.

I've been thinking about it, and...I still really DO need a good, pre-Mattel Felicity in the collection! The Felicity I have now is pre-Mattel, but she is one of the later editions with aburn hair. So, im still going to sell most of my dolls, including Felicity, and still want a small collection, but Felicity simply must be apart of the collection! Im thinking that with some of the money I get from selling the dolls, I may get a good, possibly even German Felicity. They go for very high prices on ebay, though...So my collection would include Kaya, Felicity, Josefina and Molly... And Kirsten will be my moms...Yea...

I would encourage you to take your time and think it over for a couple MONTHS. Only because I was feeling the same way you do, I feel this way a lot. I often think of selling my dolls. My mom isn't crazy about them but she doesn't want me to sell them either. I have decided, unless I need the money, I am going to keep them. Maybe I will have to box them up for a while, but I don't want to have any regrets. I can get most if not all of my money back one day....
I may have girls someday too.
